Well done to Max and Holly Saunders who took part in last weekend's Schools National CX Championships and both came away with a podium place, 2nd for Max and 3rd for Holly. Here is a little write up on their race, provided by Steve, their Dad and I thought I would share it on the forum. I will provide a cut-down version for the local press next week.

The venue for the BSCA (British Schools Cycling Association) National Cyclo Cross Championship was Abbey Stadium in Redditch. The kids They had both competed once before and I think Ella Tandy has won the girls event previously.

Holly was entered into the u9's. The field was just shy of 30 strong and the kids were racing for 15mins. It was a long, technical course. 90% of which was over undulating grass with lots of off-camber switch-backs and a couple of big climbs thrown in. After a good start, Holly got herself well placed as 2nd girl. However, the leading girl was a country-mile ahead of Holly and for the first lap she led the entire field. She was reigning champion and looked a very strong competitor. She had lots of Welsh support with her too. Holly settled into a good pace managing to keep her concentration as the grass started to cut-up and the off-camber turns became increasingly slippery. There had been a bit of a pile up on the start line which had caused a few of the strongest riders to get caught up at the back of the field. One such rider was catching Holly and although Holly was running at a decent pace up in second, it was inevitable that she would get caught. This eventually happened midway through the race. From that point, the 3rd place was Holly's to lose. Thankfully, she managed to keep herself upright and held on to 3rd.

Weather conditions were great for racing: warm, overcast with no wind. Max decided to strip off all his cold weather kit and race in short sleeves for the first time this year. After a good showing in the WMCCL, Max was gridded on the front row. He got a great start and was nicely tucked into a trio that blasted away from the field. Racing in the U11's, the course was slightly extended with some logs added that needed hurdling and the race time was up to 20mins. After a clean first lap and with Max looking calm in the small group, he decided to make a break and accelerated away into the lead. With a nice gap opening back to 2nd place, Max made a mistake. He was attempting to take a difficult, uphill corner too tightly and slipped, caught his pedal on the course marker and this caused him to fall off and roll away from his bike down the hill! With the second and third place riders encouraged again, they passed Max while he recovered his bike and composure. The task was now to catch the leaders. Max rode hard for the next 10 mins and eventually was within striking distance of the leader. It was now just a 2 horse race. With the bell ringing for the final lap, Max was close. Unfortunately for Max, as he rounded the last corner his eagerness to get the power down for the final sprint to the line caused him to unclip from his pedal and the delay getting up-to-speed left him just too much to do to win. A fine and very entertaining second place all the same.

Congratulations to Team Saunders!

Well done Holly and Max, sounds like really nail biting racing. A great way to finish off a very strong cross season. Can't wait to see you on the circuit for the road season.
