Solihull Cycling Club has a team of British Cycling-trained coaches who deliver group sessions to develop our member’s cycling skills and fitness. They include specialists in road, track and cyclocross racing. The sessions cater for all - young and old - beginner to elite.
Our base for coaching is at a dedicated cycling circuit in Tudor Grange Park, Solihull, but we also run sessions at other track and off-road cycling venues.
The Tudor Grange Circuit is 850 metres in length and is floodlit in the evening. The circuit was built in collaboration with Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council and British Cycling, but, it was the brainchild of club member and former Tour de France rider Harry Reynolds. It was Harry’s vision to create a traffic free, safe environment where the club could build its next generation of champions.
And that has worked! Riders who started their cycling career at Tudor Grange include a Junior World Champion and a current World Tour professional.
If you are a member of Solihull CC, you can enrol via the “Solihull CC – Tudor Grange Circuit” page on RiderHQ via the link below.
There is an annual subscription charge to help cover the cost of booking the circuit (we pay a fee to Solihull MBC for each rider that participates in a session at Tudor Grange) and the cost of coaching admin, training and equipment. For adults who attend coached sessions on an occasional basis, there is a Pay as You Go option.
Solihull Cycling Club tries to give its young members the best start to a life of cycling, whether that's being confident and safe on the road or track, or taking part in cycle sport.
Throughout the year, we have a weekly schedule of coached sessions at the Tudor Grange Circuit for youth riders. It generally follows this pattern:
In the Spring and Summer, these sessions take place on the tarmac circuit at Tudor Grange, but during the Autumn and Winter months, they focus on cyclocross, and therefore take place 'off-road', on the grassy banks around the circuit.
We prefer to group our young riders by skill level and ability rather than by age. We follow British Cycling's Go-Ride programme, and we are developing a set of awards called the Skills Pathway. There are three levels - Bronze, Silver and Gold. Each level focuses on cycling skills suitable for the ability of the children at that level and incorporates a skill set suitable for a range of cycling disciplines.
During the Spring and Summer months our youth sessions are based at the circuit in Tudor Grange Park and concentrate on bike handling skills and riding in groups. In the Autumn, we switch our focus to the off-road discipline of Cyclocross, which is a great introduction to cycle racing.
All our volunteer coaches are British Cycling trained and Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checked. They also hold first aid certification. We know how important it is for children to get to know and trust their coach, so we try to keep the same coaching team for specific sessions.
Our coaching is restricted to Solihull CC members, but we periodically run introductory sessions for new riders who do not need to join the club until after that session. Please email us using the link below if you would like to learn more.
